Every week, someone sits across from me and says some version of the same predictable thing: “I don’t know what’s wrong.” People are generally fluent in “why”—they’ve read the articles and watched the videos. They can name the childhood trauma, the trigger, the pattern, and sometimes even the attachment style. What eludes them is the “what.” The feeling is there. But the word for it doesn’t show up.
That gap is not a failure of intelligence. It’s a failure of translation, and it turns out translation is the whole job.
The binding problem
Freud built psychoanalysis on a wager that sounds almost too simplistic: symptoms are what happens to emotions when they can’t be put into words. He called the process binding—the mind’s way of turning raw excitation into something mentally representable and manageable.
French psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan pushed Freud’s idea further by arguing that the unconscious is structured like a language. What we cannot consciously think or say doesn’t simply disappear; it can show up indirectly—in slips of the tongue, repeated patterns, symptoms, fantasies, or compulsive behavior. For Lacan, the unconscious works through connections between words and meanings: one idea points to another, one word substitutes for another, and sometimes there are important gaps where something cannot be put into words at all. A symptom can therefore be understood as a kind of message the person cannot yet read. The problem is not necessarily that they are hiding a secret from themselves, but that some experience, feeling, or conflict has never been fully represented in language and therefore keeps expressing itself in other ways.
Which raises a simple question: how can unconscious feelings and experiences surface to become something we can put into words? And why does writing seem to do this job better than talking?
Language’s first job
No one knows exactly when humans developed language. Estimates range from two million years ago to as recently as fifty thousand, depending on whether you’re considering anatomy, genes, or archaeology. These fields of study answer slightly different questions. But a recent genomic analysis suggests something intriguing: the biological capacity for language likely emerged well before humans could reliably communicate with each other. The researchers propose that language began as a private cognitive system, a way of structuring thoughts in one’s mind, before it became a tool for spreading gossip. Communication was the next step. Organizing one’s own mind was the original job.
If that theory is correct, it changes the way we think about writing. Journaling isn’t just a modern wellness habit tacked onto language as an add-on. Rather, it’s language doing what it was designed to do: make sense of the world.
Vocabulary isn’t clarity
Verbal intelligence is often overrated and misunderstood. While crystallized intelligence is your overall library of stored facts—the vocabulary and verbal reasoning you accumulate over a lifetime—and fluid intelligence is your raw ability to use reason and logic, verbal intelligence is the specific toolset you use to process and express ideas through words.
The catch is that having a large toolbox doesn’t mean you can build anything with it. I’ve spoken with many articulate, well-read people who ramble for ten minutes without ever landing on their point, as well as many people with modest vocabularies who express themselves perfectly in one sentence. The first group has words. The second group has clarity. These are not the same skill, and confusing them is where most self-help writing advice goes wrong. It teaches people to write more elaborate sentences when the actual therapeutic mechanism is elsewhere entirely.
Clarity surfaces when verbal intelligence utilizes three specific tools that all point to the same target: a rich vocabulary, the ability to concisely select the right words, and a genuine communicative purpose. Failing to use any one of these tools results in a recognizable failure mode: eloquent rambling, terse aimlessness, or knowing exactly what you mean but never quite expressing it. These are not problems of intelligence. They are selection problems. Selection is not a matter of stored knowledge; it’s a learned executive function that lets you stop yourself mid-sentence and choose better words.
From image to sentence
This is where the mechanics of language production can explain something clinical. A feeling doesn’t begin as a sentence. It begins as an image or sensation—a nonverbal code that is entirely separate from the verbal one. Psychologists call this dual coding. It explains why concrete things easily translate into words while diffuse feelings resist it. There is no picture attached to “I feel like I’m failing everyone,” so it has nowhere obvious to land. Before it becomes a sentence, it must pass through what researchers call a preverbal stage—shaped but wordless—and only then is grammar imposed on it (subject, verb, clause). This is the scaffolding that turns a feeling into a thought you can actually examine. You cannot skip this step and end up with language. The moment you try to express something, syntax is forced on you as the price of admission.
The page doesn’t cheat
Speech gets to cheat. The tone of a speaker’s voice, a pause, or a listener’s facial expression can do half the interpretive work for you. All of these elements allow spoken language to remain flexible, connected by conjunctions such as “and,” “or,” and “if,” while the real meaning rides underneath, never touching the words themselves, missing the real target. Writing removes all of those props. The page doesn’t know your tone, and it makes your ramblings stand out. There’s no “Wait, what I mean is...” Grammar alone must carry the entire weight, which is precisely why it forces you toward harder, more explicit structures—using words like “because,” “although,” and “which”—that speech lets you avoid. Writing is the one place language has nowhere to hide.

Where the feeling gets stuck
Not coincidentally, this is also where things go wrong clinically. Alexithymia, or the difficulty of identifying and naming one’s own emotional states, is often mistaken for low intelligence. But the deficit occurs earlier, in the connection between raw emotion and symbol. Wilma Bucci’s referential process describes this well. Without a functioning bridge from the body to words, feelings remain outside of cognitive control and manifest elsewhere—as psychosomatic symptoms, or fists through drywall.
American social psychologist James Pennebaker has conducted decades of research on the therapeutic effects of expressive writing. His studies have revealed that people who write about a difficult or traumatic experience for several consecutive days show measurable improvements in physical health and mood several months later. This is not because writing feels good in the moment—usually it doesn’t—but because putting the experience into words allows the mind to finally move on. You cannot write “and then” without deciding what happened first. That decision is the treatment.
None of this means that writing is a replacement for therapy or that a diary can do what an analyst does. However, if you learn the method required to do it effectively, it does mean journaling is not a lesser cousin of the couch. Both are doing the same essential work of binding loose ends into something that can be examined, argued with, and revised.
The unconscious may be structured like a language. Expressive writing is simply where you go to find out what it has been trying to tell you.
